A swim spa is the height of luxury. These amazing spas are large enough to swim in while also featuring the jets and warm waters that make spas so relaxing.
When using a swim spa, however, you do have to remember to remain hydrated. If you don’t, you may start feeling dizzy.
To ensure your best health, here’s why it’s so important to stay hydrated while using a swim spa.
Why You Must Drink Water While Swimming in a Swim Spa
Most people realize the dangers of not staying hydrated in the hot summer weather, but few realize that hot water can lead to dehydration, too. It’s water, after all, so it just doesn’t seem logical that hot water could make you dehydrated.
When using any type of hot tub or spa, you can actually become dehydrated pretty quickly if you stay inside for too long or don’t take the proper precautions, like drinking water.
If you’re using your all-season pool for exercise or training, you’re also likely to become dehydrated more quickly than usual since you are engaging in physical activity. Moderate to vigorous exercise is going to make your body work harder, which means that it will need more fuel and water.
Make certain you’re well-hydrated before you get in and keep water on the edge of the swim spa to drink as needed.
Staying Hydrated
There are a number of different beverages out there that will help you stay hydrated, but nothing does the job like pure water. Drink water before you get into your swim spa, then have a glass or two after you get out.
You should also have water on hand near the swim spa so you can have a drink while you’re resting. If you’re going to be training for more than 30 minutes, it’s a good idea to set an alarm on your phone to go off every 15 minutes to remind you to drink. Stop and have some water every time the alarm goes off.
There are other beverages out there, of course, but not all of them are as refreshing as water. Sports drinks can help if you’re exercising for a long period of time since they do replace electrolytes and contain vitamins, but you do have to be careful with these drinks. Many contain a large amount of sugar and sodium.
Don’t try to stay caffeinated with sodas or other sugar-filled drinks. They don’t help. In fact, they are diuretics and will actually make you lose water more quickly. Avoid them and stick to water. If you want to drink something with a little flavor to it, you can add natural flavors to water or even use an infusion cup to add fruit flavoring to your drink.
